Officials from Transplant Games of America and Donate Life America have announced that the two organizations will partner on the 2014 Games in Houston, Texas.  The Games will officially be known as the Donate Life Transplant Games of America

A common interest was found between the two organizations in the importance of increasing organ, eye, and tissue donation across the country.  Joint messaging will now be distributed through Donate Life State Teams and the more than 44 teams expected to participate in the Transplant Games next summer.

David Fleming, President and CEO of Donate Life America said, “It is exciting to see the Transplant Games of America’s commitment to celebrating life and encouraging Americans to register as organ, eye, and tissue donors.  We are honored to be a part of the team producing the games.”

More than 110 million American adults are currently enrolled in state donor registries, an increase of 50 percent over the past five years.  Still, with 120,000 men, women and children awaiting lifesaving or healing transplants, there is a critical need for more registered donors.

“The partnership between Donate Life America and the Transplant Games of America is a natural evolution in furthering the mission we all share.  We gather to honor all organ, corneal, and tissue donors while celebrating the amazing accomplishments of recipients from across the company”, said Bill Ryan, President and CEO of the Transplant Games of America.  “At the same time, we are all focused on increasing the number of registered donors in every state”, Ryan added.

The Transplant Games of America is a multi-sport festival event that celebrates organ, corneal, and tissue transplantation, honors those who gave the gift of life and healing, and motivates people to join their state donor registry.  More than 3,000 participants from across the United States will travel to Houston for the five-day event.  Competitions include track and field events, swimming, cycling, volleyball, bowling, basketball and five new non-traditional events, ballroom dancing, corn hole (bean bag toss), Texas Hold-em Poker, darts and a trivia challenge to promote greater participation. Outreach in our minority communities is another focus of the 2013 Games.  A public 5K Run/Walk will launch the event to promote the need for more registered donors.

Participants competing in medal events have either received an organ, corneal, or tissue transplant or are a living donor. Donor family members will also travel to the Games to show support for athletes and celebrate the lives of their loved ones. The Transplant Games will take place across the city of Houston July 11-15, 2014.
