Houston to host multiple 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup matches

The Harris County – Houston Sports Authority, in partnership with the Houston Dynamo FC, and Lone Star Sports & Entertainment, announced today that both BBVA Stadium and NRG Stadium will play host to Gold Cup matches this summer. This, the 16th edition of Concacaf's flagship men's international competition, will crown the global region's best men's national team.

"The announcement of these outstanding venues moves us a step closer to what is sure to be a great Gold Cup this summer," said Concacaf President and FIFA Vice President Victor Montagliani. "It is fitting that in our 60th anniversary year we will use a number of stadiums with a rich history of hosting Concacaf football, while also making history with new venues that will host Gold Cup matches for the very first time."

Houston is one of only seven metropolitan markets selected to welcome matches in the 2021 edition of the tournament. Houston's elite facilities, BBVA Stadium and NRG Stadium, account for two of the 11 host venues from around the country awarded matches.

"We are a major sports destination with the best fans in the nation," said Harris County – Houston Sports Authority CEO Janis Burke. "The fact that we have two fabulous venues capable of successfully hosting multiple Gold Cup matches is a true testament to how special our community has become in the global sports realm. Houston is a host candidate for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and being a cornerstone in this marquee international tournament supports our bid efforts."

This announcement marks the fifth time BBVA Stadium has taken part in the Gold Cup, having been a part of every edition since it opened its doors in 2012.

NRG Stadium has played host to some of the most well-attended matches in tournament history, including a sold-out quarterfinal doubleheader in 2019.

The 2021 Gold Cup will officially kick off with a new Preliminary Round where 12 nations who qualified through their Concacaf Nations League performances will compete for the final three spots in the 16 team Gold Cup Group Stage. The Round One and Two Prelims matchups were drawn on September 10, 2020. The Group Stage will kick off on July 10, and the Final will be played on August 1 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.

BBVA Stadium announces updated fan safety protocols for 2021 events

BBVA Stadium announced updated fan health and safety protocols today for upcoming events at the facility, including the 2021 spring football season for Texas Southern University and the 2021 seasons for Houston Dynamo FC and the Houston Dash.

The maximum capacity for events under the plan will expand to approximately 6,500 fans, which represents 30 percent of the stadium’s official capacity of 22,039 and an increase from the capacity of approximately 3,000 for events last fall. Although the Stadium is expanding its capacity, it will do so while maintaining safe social distancing between each seating pod in keeping with guidance provided by Major League Soccer.

All guests at BBVA Stadium will still be required to wear masks or facial coverings except when they are eating or drinking at their seat. Additionally, social distancing will also continue to be practiced and emphasized throughout the concourse and all public areas of the facility.

In order to enhance the contact-free guest experience, the Stadium installed self-scan ticket scanning pods at each gate and added the pre-event health questionnaire to guests’ digital ticket on the SeatGeek App.

The Stadium’s concession partner, Levy, will offer larger menu of concession items available for purchase online and in-seat delivery through the sEATz App. All Levy employees will continue to wear PPE at all times for the safety of our guests, and will continue to wear gloves when handling food.

All food products will either be pre-wrapped or served in a hinged box to ensure that the food is covered when being served to guests; and all cutlery will be pre-packaged, including in premium seating areas, while all condiments will be distributed in individual packets rather than self-serve locations.

BBVA Stadium will also continue to be a cash-free venue in order to eliminate the need to pass currency between individuals. All Stadium concession vendors as well as the adidas Dynamo Team Shop will accept credit cards as well as Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay.

Additional health and safety protocols which will carry over from 2020 include staggered entry times and designated entry gates for guests, pre-determined and socially-distanced seating pods in groups of two to six seats, more than 100 hand sanitizer stations throughout the facility, and rigorous and frequent cleaning processes throughout the facility.

The first event with the updated protocols will be Texas Southern’s home football game on Saturday, March 20, followed by Dynamo and Dash matches in April. The Dash open the 2021 NWSL Challenge Cup presented by Secret Deodorant on Friday, April 9 against the Chicago Red Stars at 7 p.m. CST, and Houston Dynamo FC will kick off their 2021 MLS campaign on Friday, April 16 against the San Jose Earthquakes at 7 p.m.

Tickets for the Dash home matches in the Challenge Cup go on sale this Friday at 10 a.m. CST at HoustonDash.com/Tickets, while Dynamo tickets will go on sale later this month.

BBVA Stadium Executive Vice President and General Manager Juan Rodriguez was honored by VenuesNow as an industry All-Star, the publication announced today in its October issue.

VenuesNow is a leading trade publication that covers live entertainment venues throughout the world. The publication covers every aspect of live event venues, including operations, security, technology, concessions, bookings, sponsorships, ticketing, tenants and more.

Introduced in 2019, the All-Stars award recognizes and honors extraordinary people and places changing the face of the venues business. Rodriguez was one of 50 honorees across the sports and entertainment industry. Factors that were included in the selection process included documented excellence, innovation, financial success, commitment to diversity, and leadership in their field.

“I am overwhelmed and humbled to be included with a tremendous group of my peers, friends, and leaders dedicated to creating a memorable fan experience. Rodriguez was named the Executive Vice President and General Manager of BBVA Stadium in Houston in June of 2017. Under his leadership, the facility has undergone a number of upgrades, including updates to the concession experience, installation of next-generation WiFi 6 throughout the building, and the installation of new LED video boards. Rodriguez also oversaw a major initiative to rename the facility from BBVA Compass Stadium to BBVA Stadium in alignment with BBVA’s global rebrand in 2019.

This year, under Rodriguez’s leadership, BBVA Stadium was the first facility in Houston to reopen to fans, doing so with the approval of health experts from the City of Houston and Harris County in mid-September with a limited capacity. The facility took a number of safety precautions, including requiring temperature scans and health surveys for all individuals prior to entry, digital ticketing, physically distanced seating, contact-free concession and merchandise ordering, and enhanced sanitation protocols.

“We are incredibly fortunate to have a leader of Juan’s caliber at the head of our efforts to deliver championship-level experiences to our guests at every event,” said Houston Dynamo and Houston Dash president John Walker. “Juan has been instrumental in improving the guest experience through capital improvements to the facility as well as enhanced guest service initiatives, and his leadership has been particularly crucial this year as we have adapted to the changing environment caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Prior to joining the club, he spent the previous three years as the Senior Vice President of Arena Operations for the NBA’s Sacramento Kings. In that role, he oversaw the construction and opening of the Golden 1 Center, the Kings’ new home arena in Downtown Sacramento hailed as the greenest and most technologically advanced sports venue in the world, and served as General Manager of the arena. Golden 1 Center was named Sports Facility of the Year in its first year of operation by the Sports Business Journal.

The move to BBVA Stadium brought Rodriguez back to Houston, where he previously spent more than 14 years with Reliant (now NRG) Park in a number of roles. During his tenure at Reliant Park, Rodriguez helped oversee the construction and opening of Reliant Stadium, home of the NFL’s Houston Texans, and major events such as Super Bowl XXXVIII, the 2011 NCAA Final Four, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, and numerous major international soccer matches.

Rodriguez has more than 25 years of sports and entertainment experience to this role, including experience in the NFL, NBA, NHL, NCAA in addition to a diverse entertainment background. He began his operations career with an Arena Football League team in his hometown before transitioning to venue management at Miami Arena in 1995.

Since it opened in 2012, BBVA Stadium has hosted more than 350 ticketed events and has established itself as the premier facility in America for international soccer matches. The stadium has played host to nearly 20 different international soccer clubs, more than 30 men’s and women’s national soccer teams and 17 men’s and women’s national rugby teams.

A football national champion will be crowned at BBVA Stadium in 2024, and the road to the Final Four will travel through Houston again in 2026. The road to the Final Four will travel through Houston again. The NCAA announced Wednesday that Houston has been selected to host the 2026 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Regional at Toyota Center. Houston, which will host the 2023 Final Four, was due to host the 2020 Regionals that were cancelled due to the pandemic.

In addition, the NCAA also announced Houston would host the 2024 Division III Football Championship – the Stagg Bowl – and the 2025 Women’s Division III Golf Championships.

This will be the seventh time the Men’s Division I Regional has been played in Houston dating back to 1973, but the first time it will be held in Toyota Center.
“Once again, Houston proves that we are a great city to host major sports events,’’ said Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner. “We have world-class venues, hotels, and great amenities to welcome the teams, officials, and fans who will travel here. I thank the NCAA for selecting Houston as a host city for the 2026 Regional, the 2024 Stagg Bowl and another Division III Women’s Golf Championship.”

These three championships add to the tradition Houston has of hosting not only big events like the Super Bowl, but also a vast array of NCAA Championships. In addition to the 2023 Final Four, which will be held at NRG Park, Houston will host the 2024 College Football Playoff.

“We have a great history of hosting not just Final Fours and Men’s Regionals, but NCAA events at every level, ‘’ said Harris County – Houston Sports Authority CEO Janis Burke.

“We are so proud to welcome back the Regionals as well as the Division III Women’s Golf Championship and add the Division III Football Championship. The 2020 Regional was sold out prior to being cancelled due to COVID-19. Now, the 2026 Regional will be the first held there. Previous Regionals were held at Hofheinz Pavilion (1973), NRG Stadium (2008, 2010, 2015) and The Summit (1980, 1986).

The Stagg Bowl will make its Houston debut at BBVA Stadium. The addition of the 2025 Women’s Division III Championships marks the sixth time since 2015 that the city will host a women’s NCAA Golf Championship. Houston hosted the Division III Championships at Bay Oaks Country Club in 2017 and 2019 and is scheduled to host it again in 2022. Houston also hosted the 2018 Division II Women’s Championships.

Forty-three states plus the District of Columbia were selected to host at least one NCAA championship event, with California garnering the most, with 34. Texas was second with 30, while North Carolina totaled 28, followed by Pennsylvania with 27 and Ohio with 25.

The Houston Dynamo and Houston Dash and the Harris County Clerk office today announced that BBVA Stadium will serve as a Vote Center for the 2020 Presidential General Election. BBVA Stadium will be open to any registered voter in Harris County on Election Day, Nov. 3, with hours of operation from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

“Voting is the most sacred act of our democracy and our actions to preserve, support and protect it, especially during a pandemic, are essentially to engage in the process,” said Executive Vice President and General Manager Juan Rodriguez. “By working with our local election officials in Harris County, we’re honored that we can open up BBVA Stadium to create a safe place for our neighbors, friends and family members to cast a ballot and share in the future of our community.”

Voting booths will be located at Audi Sport Club on the West side of the stadium, serving as the entrance of the vote center.

“I’m thrilled that BBVA Stadium, home to both the Houston Dynamo and the Houston Dash, will be a voting center on Election Day,” said Harris County Clerk Chris Hollins. “I encourage all voters to make a plan to vote and participate in the upcoming election.”

BBVA Stadium to host limited number of fans at upcoming home matches

BBVA Stadium will reopen its doors to fans on a limited basis for upcoming Houston Dynamo and Houston Dash home matches, the Stadium and the teams announced today. The announcement comes after the Club’s plan to reopen was approved by officials at the City of Houston, along with both Major League Soccer and the National Women’s Soccer League.

The maximum capacity for events under the plan will be 3,000 fans, which represents 13.6 percent of the stadium’s official capacity of 22,039. Although Major League Soccer has not released the schedule for Phase 2 of its continuation of play, that announcement is expected later this week; while the Houston Dash are set to return to BBVA Stadium on Sept. 26 when they host the Orlando Pride as part of the Verizon NWSL Community Shield.

Houston Dynamo and Houston Dash season ticket members will have the first opportunity to claim tickets for each team’s respective matches. An exclusive pre-sale opportunity for all Dynamo and Dash 365 Members will begin on Thursday, during which time they can request seats for upcoming matches.

The Club conducted surveys with season ticket members during the break in play and found that more than 60 percent of fans responded that they were interested in attending some or all matches at BBVA Stadium in a socially-distanced setting.

Last month, the Houston Venues & Events Task Force, which includes BBVA Stadium, announced the Houston Clean initiative. The campaign was created to unify the efforts of businesses in a variety of industries throughout the city and present a consistent set of operating guidelines to visitors. Those guidelines serve as a commitment to practice recommended health safety protocols in alignment with orders issued by federal, state and local officials as well as the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).

BBVA Stadium is implementing a number of policy changes and safety enhancements in order to ensure the safest possible experience for its guests. Those changes and enhancements include:

DIGITAL TICKETS & HEALTH WAIVER: To minimize physical contact between stadium staff and guests, all tickets for upcoming events will be delivered and scanned digitally. As part of the ticket purchase process, fans will also be required to fill out a health waiver. Upon arrival at BBVA Stadium, guests’ tickets will be scanned from their smart phone screen. All guests will need to download the new AXS App in order to receive and scan their tickets.

READ OFFICIAL TICKET POLICY

SOCIALLY-DISTANCED PARKING: Fans are encouraged to purchase parking spaces in advance for Lot B and Lot C, located on the north end of the stadium. Parking attendants will be wearing appropriate personal protective equipment and will direct vehicles to park using every other space in order to ensure adequate distance between guests as they exit and enter their vehicles.

MASKS REQUIRED: All individuals will be required to wear a mask that covers their nose and mouth at all times while on the BBVA Stadium property, unless they are eating or drinking. If a guest arrives without a mask, he or she will be directed to the north end of the stadium where he or she may purchase one from Fanatics, the Club’s official merchandise vendor.

DESIGNATED ENTRY GATES: Fans will be instructed which gate to enter based on their seat location in order to ensure they enter at the closest point to their seat.

There will be three designated points of entry into BBVA Stadium for fans: the H-Town Gate on the northeast corner, the Memorial Hermann Gate on the northwest corner and the Audi Sport Club on the west side of the building.

Guests with seats on the East and South sides of the seating bowl will enter through the H-Town Gate; guests with seats on the West and North sides of the stadium will enter through the Memorial Hermann Gate.

The Audi Sport Club entrance is reserved for fans in premium seating areas (Audi Sport Club, President’s Club, Suites).

NOTE: Working Club and Stadium staff, as well as media covering the events, will enter through the Goya Gate on the southeast corner of the stadium.

STAGGERED ENTRY TIMES: Fans will be assigned designated entry times based on their seat location in order to minimize crowding at entry gates. Stadium gates open 90 minutes prior to kickoff, and for the first 30 minutes any fan can enter the stadium through their designated entry gate.

Beginning 60 minutes prior to kickoff, guests with seats in Rows H-T will have a 30-minute window during which they will be able to enter. Guests with seats in Rows AA-G of each section will be able to enter beginning 30 minutes prior to kickoff.

Fans who miss their designated entry window will also be able to enter the building after kickoff.

EXTENDED ENTRY QUEUES; FLOOR SIGNAGE: In order to allow fans to remain properly distanced while entering the stadium, the entry queues at each of the gates. Signage has also been placed on the sidewalk at each entry location in order to help guests maintain at least six feet of distance while standing in line.

TEMPERATURE CHECKS UPON ENTRY: Each guest will be required to undergo a temperature check with a touchless temporal thermometer prior to entry into the stadium. If a guest has a temperature above the designated threshold of 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit, he or she will be directed to a cooling station where he or she can rest for a few minutes before being tested again. If a guest has multiple temperature checks above 100.4 degrees, he or she will not be allowed to enter the stadium.

ADDITIONAL HAND SANITIZER STATIONS: BBVA Stadium has installed forty-two (42) hand sanitizer stations throughout the concourse; and portable sanitizer pumps will be placed in high-traffic areas such as entry gates.

UPPER SEATING BOWL ONLY: In order to keep a safe distance between the players and fans, seating will be limited to the upper seating bowl at BBVA Stadium.

SEATING PODS: Tickets have been grouped into pods of two (2), three (3), four (4), five (5) and six (6) seats. When selecting seats, guests are required to utilize all of the tickets in a pod in order to ensure that only groups of people who know one another are seated next to each other. There will be a maximum of two (2) pods on each row, allowing guests in each pod to enter the section from opposite sides of the section and not have to cross in front of one another within a row.

DESIGNATED ENTRY POINTS: Each fan will receive a designated vomitorium, or staircase, to use in order to access his or her seats. This is done to minimize the instance of fans having to cross directly in front of one another within a seating row to access their seats.

EDUCATIONAL SIGNAGE: Additional signage will be located throughout the Stadium to encourage and promote health and safety measures. Signage will include CDC information on proper hand-washing procedures in all restrooms, along with CDC signage at PPE distribution points to show the proper techniques for putting on and removing PPE.

Floor marker signage will be installed throughout the concourse in order to help guests maintain appropriate distance between one another while waiting in line. Confined spaces such as elevators will also be marked with a reduced capacity in order to allow for proper spacing.

FOOD & BEVERAGE SAFETY ENHANCEMENTS: Levy Restaurants, the concessionaire at BBVA Stadium, has instituted a number of safety enhancements within its operations as well. All Levy employees will wear PPE at all times, and will wear gloves when handling food. Gloves will be replaced frequently throughout the event, including before and after handling food.

All food products will either be pre-wrapped or served in a hinged box to ensure that the food is covered when being served to guests.

All cutlery will be pre-packaged, including in the Audi Sport Club and other premium seating areas, and all condiments will be distributed in individual packets rather than self-serve locations. Additionally, all cups and plates will be single-use and disposable.

Self-service fountain drink stations will be removed, and beverage refills will be discontinued for the time being. Fountain drinks and draft beers will be served with a lid, and guests will be given a paper-wrapped straw upon request.

DIGITAL ORDERING & CONTACT-FREE PAYMENTS: All concession and merchandise payments will be done contact-free, including vendors selling food and beverages in the concourse and/or in the seating bowl. BBVA Stadium will be a cash-free venue in order to eliminate the need to pass currency between individuals.

IN-SEAT ORDERING AND PURCHASING: In addition to food and beverage vendors selling product in the seating bowl, guests may also order concessions and merchandise from their seats. Fanatics will offer fans the ability to order from their seat via the Dynamo Mobile Team Shop and then pick up their order at a designated location inside the stadium. Levy Restaurants offers in-seat ordering and service via their sEATz app, allowing guests to avoid lines altogether.

Each seat in use will have a QR code placed in front of it which will direct fans to a landing page where they can download the Fanatics and Levy apps as well as matchday content and other key information.

INCREASED FREQUENCY OF CLEANING: BBVA Stadium has increased the number of housekeeping staff on-site for upcoming events and will institute an increased schedule of cleanings in all high-traffic areas such as restrooms, concession stands and entry gates. Eight hours prior to the start of each event, all outdoor spaces in use will be cleaned and disinfected; and areas will be cleaned and disinfected once again following each event.

Houston Dynamo return to BBVA Stadium in MLS play Aug. 21 vs. FC Dallas

The Houston Dynamo will play their first match at BBVA Stadium in more than five months when they host their in-state rivals FC Dallas on Friday, Aug. 21, the Club and Major League Soccer announced today.

The Dynamo vs. FC Dallas match will be closed to fans and will have limited media access. That contest, and all other locally-televised Dynamo matches this season, will be broadcast live throughout the Greater Houston area on QuestTEXAS Ch. 55 as part of the Club’s new broadcast agreement with TEGNA Inc.

Today’s MLS announcement laid out the league’s plans for its continuation of the 2020 season, which will include 18 matches from late August through Decision Day on November 8. Added to the two matches clubs played prior to the suspension of the season and three group-stage matches in the MLS Is Back Tournament, which counted toward regular-season records, clubs will each play 23 matches in the season. Houston resumes play with a cumulative record of 0-2-3 on the season.

The first phase of the return to play in home markets includes six matches for each club, three at home and three away. The return to play in home markets will feature comprehensive health and safety protocols, including regular testing of players, coaches and essential staff for COVID-19. The Dynamo continue to work with local health officials on protocols to facilitate a safe environment for fans to return to BBVA Stadium later this year.

Following the (re)opening day against FC Dallas, Houston’s schedule will include a trip to Sporting Kansas City on Tuesday, Aug. 25 followed by back-to-back home matches against Minnesota United FC on Wednesday, Sept. 2 and Sporting Kansas City on Saturday, Sept. 5. The Dynamo wrap up the six-game opening stretch with visits to the Colorado Rapids on Wednesday, Sept. 9 and FC Dallas on Monday, Sept. 14.

As with the MLS is Back Tournament, COVID-19 testing protocols will again play an important role in MLS’ competition framework. MLS continues to work closely with the league’s infectious disease advisors as well as advisors for the MLSPA on the plan for testing. All clubs are forming testing partnerships with a local certified lab, and all players, technical staff, and essential club staff will be tested every other day, including the day before each match. Also, guidelines will be provided to players, coaches and essential staff to avoid the risk of contracting and spreading COVID-19 during their time away from club facilities.

In addition to adhering to health, safety and medical protocols, another focus of the new schedule is efficient travel. Teams will take chartered flights, and for the majority of road trips will arrive in the host market on matchday and depart after the match later that evening.

MLS plans to announce the balance of the regular season schedule by early September as the league continues to work with infectious disease experts, league and club medical personnel, and government officials in all markets in charting a course for the completion of the 2020 season.

Houston’s Hospitality Community Launches ‘HOUSTON CLEAN’

The Houston Venues & Events Task Force along with the hospitality, tourism and transportation industries are committed to the health and safety of residents and visitors. As the area prepares to safely reopen, industry partners have joined together to form Houston Clean, a campaign aimed to help guests easily identify safety measures in place to protect both patrons and associates.

Houston Clean (www.HoustonClean.com) unifies the individual efforts of businesses to present consistent operating guidelines to visitors. These guidelines serve as a baseline commitment to practice recommended health safety protocols in alignment with orders issued by federal, state and local officials, as well as the Center for Disease Control (CDC).

“The Houston Clean initiative marks a significant step in addressing safety concerns related to the COVID-19 crisis. The community-wide effort from our greater hospitality industry partners is a long-term commitment not to 'return to business as usual', but instead to bring forth a more resilient community,” Mayor Sylvester Turner.

BBVA Stadium’s F&B Director of Operations sheds light on how Levy is working to “get it right" for fans post COVID-19

Levy’s website describes their company mission as: “From the stadium to the head table, Levy leverages unbridled creativity, custom strategies, impeccable service, and true love for great food to create unforgettable experiences.”

When guests come to BBVA Stadium, Mr. Edward Hurtado, Director of Levy Operations at BBVA Stadium, puts forth tremendous efforts to ensure all guests that indulge in food or beverage have a memorable time and an even better customer-service experience. He has been with the Levy organization for almost 17 years and has served in various roles at BBVA for the past six and a half years. His most fond memories while working at the home of Dynamo and Dash soccer in Houston, TX, involve “seeing the excitement on guests faces when they are having a great time at the stadium.”

Since the COVID-19 pandemic began back in March, Hurtado and the Levy Team have been working tirelessly to prepare for what's to come after it’s all over. “We are moving into uncharted waters in the F&B world and making sure we get it right for our guests and fans post-COVID is at the top of our list of important objectives,” Hurtado said when asked how the pandemic has affected his day-to-day duties.

Some may exclaim that there are no “pros” to the predicament we are currently living in, but Hurtado begs to differ. With the extra time granted by the pandemic situation, he has been able to polish up on some skills & tasks that he would normally delegate to others on the Levy Team, as well as help facilitate BBVA Stadium’s F&B team donate countless pounds of produce that was originally purchased for matches. The donations went to several entities around Houston who were in desperate need, such as Open Door Mission on Harrisburg, who received close to 500 pounds of produce in March, and a second donation later in April. Levy also made a donation of salty snacks to the Houston Emergency Aid-Coalition, which helps feed the homeless population inside the city.

When the end nears on this global pandemic, Hurtado looks forward to “getting back to the normal flow of operation and events, and coming back at full-strength with even more passion and innovative and fresh ideas from the Levy Team for BBVA Stadium’s guests to enjoy during their visit.”

National Principals Day: Brandi Lira, Eastwood Academy High School

As a result of the COVID-19 outbreak, all Greater Houstonand surrounding area schoolswere ordered to suspend in-person classes, transition immediately to online courses, and reinvent the daily methods used to educate students. Therefore, today, on #NationalSchoolPrincipalDay, we want to recognize one of the thousands of principals that are goingabove and beyondfor their students during these unprecedented times.

Eastwood Academy High School, located in the heart of EADO, is one of the many schools having to adapt to the ‘new normal’ operations in 2020. Principal Brandi Lira has taken this situation head-on and was able to quickly organize a task force of staff members to help make the best of this difficult situation. In Lira’s mind, it is important to not only focus on the coursework that would have taken place in a classroom, but also think about the events and activities that the students were looking forward to since the beginning of the school year. The COVID-19 pandemic forced important student events such as homecoming games, prom, senior trips, and more to either be canceled of postponed, but Principal Lira was not about to let that happen.

“We started an‘Adopt an Eastwood Senior’ page so that community members and alumni could “adopt” a senior,” Principal Lira said. “This means they will mail weekly gifts or notes to the senior as a way to celebrate the student’s achievements. Our kids are missing out on prom, a senior trip, banquets, award ceremonies, etc., so this is my small way of trying to remind them they are not forgotten.”

This is only one of the many initiatives currently taking place at Eastwood Academy High School, all with the hope of making this time easier on the students of the community.

In the life of a high school student, sports are known to play a fundamental role, and Eastwood Academy understands that. “Our soccer team never got to play their homecoming game or get their annual banquet,” Principal Lira added. “It is the only sport we have and is very meaningful to our kids, so we gathered as a school to surprise each senior player with a gift basket, signs, and lots of cheer!” No story told by the students at the school goes unheard, bothpersonally and academically. The end ofsenior year culminates with the crowning of the two top students in the class, and thiscould notbeignored.“Our Valedictorian and Salutatorian missed out on the annual honor banquet with HISD,” Principal Lira explained. “Therefore, our staff and I surprised the kids at their homes with an Eastwood face mask,asash, $50 gift cards, and lots of love.” Principal Lira and Eastwood Academy High School have made the EADO community proud, but they are only one of the thousands of stories in H-Town, and across the country, that highlight the incredible love educators show their students on a daily basis. BBVA Stadium Turf Manager keeps pitch immaculate during Covid-19 Quarantine

As a result of the COVID-19 outbreak, most of Greater Houston and its surrounding areas were ordered to stay home and practice social distancing to decrease the spread of the virus. Many of us were sent away from our professional establishments to work from home for the foreseeable future. 

However, for BBVA Stadium Turf Manager Russell Rafter, things were going to go a different direction. From the very first moment Mayor Sylvester Turner and Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo issued the ‘Stay Home, Work Safe’ order, Rafter knew that “working from home” was going to mean something completely different to him and the entire Grounds Team.  

Rafter graduated from Texas A&M with a degree in Turfgrass Science and has worked for the Club since June of 2017, and has since gotten the opportunity be a vital participant of some incredible moments. 

“My fondest memory was in 2018 winning the US Open Cup,” Rafter stated. “You could just feel the energy from the team to the fans to the employees. It was just an overall exciting experience to be a part of.”  

When he and the Grounds guys aren’t posted-up on the sideline on gamedays, making final preparations to ensure a championship-level playing surface, they spend their days providing quality maintenance to the turf at BBVA Stadium and Houston Sports Park. During this pandemic, their assigned duties have not altered much, with the exception of a little less background noise and the observance of Social Distancing while they accomplish their tasks.  

“This pandemic has affected a lot of people. But from a grass standpoint, I am still coming in to keep up with the daily maintenance of mowing, irrigation and fertilizers needed. It definitely has been quiet at the stadium and a little freaky when all you hear are the birds,” said the TAMU graduate.  

The work that goes into an element as prestigious as a stadium pitch can be extremely tedious, and although the Grounds crew is not able to gather at playing sites and work closely together at this point, they are coordinating to make magic happen regardless of the conditions currently taking place and have a little more time to do further research in order to elevate the quality of their work. 

“One of the pros about this situation is it allows us to do more reading about different situations that may arise within a sports field. I can go back and study about diseases, weed management and see what new products are available,” Rafter added. “The one thing I’m looking forward to the most is getting back into a normal routine and being around the crew providing the best playing surface for the team.” 

As of today, there is no definite date set for the next time there will be professional action at BBVA Stadium and/or the Houston Sports Park, but one thing is certain, when the action resumes, it will all take place in immaculate conditions thanks to the Grounds crew working daily to keep things in pristine conditions.  

Houston Sports & Civic Facilities Unite to #LightItBlue Thursday Night

Houston’s sports and civic venues will join forces tomorrow evening to turn the city blue as part of the global #LightItBlue movement to support the men and women on the front lines of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

City Hall, the George R. Brown Convention Center, Partnership Tower and the bridges over Highway 59, along with BBVA Stadium, Minute Maid Park, NRG Stadium, Rice Stadium, Reckling Park, TDECU Stadium and the Toyota Center will all turn their LED signage and/or exterior marquees blue from 8-9 p.m. CDT. Many of the facilities will feature messages of thanks on their video screens, and teams and organizations across the city will be making social media posts using #LightItBlue and #MakeItBlue.

Houston will join numerous other cities around America, including New York, Seattle, Boston, Kansas City, New Orleans and many more in tonight’s campaign, which is expected to include hundreds of major sports, entertainment and civic venues across the country.

The #LightItBlue and #MakeItBlue movement began last week in the United Kingdom as they lit major landmarks throughout the country in salute to their healthcare providers. The goal of this effort is to create a global expression of support and gratitude to the healthcare and essential professionals who are saving lives and stabilizing our society.

Houston native and BBVA Stadium employee finds unique methods to reach local community

When the coronavirus outbreak forced the majority of people across the country to start working from home, there was general concern for how it would alter personal lives and daily routines. For the staff at BBVA Stadium, no gatherings meant no games or events, which in turn meant there wasn’t much going on at their workplace.

Assistant Stadium Operations Manager Jose Arroyo started thinking about how the pandemic would affect his community, and how he could use his newfound free time to help.

Having always felt a deep love for his hometown and the people in it, the native Houstonian began researching and reaching out to various organizations around the city of Houston, to find out how he could best help those in need and spread positivity. His first stop was at the Houston Food Bank on March 15, where he contributed to making more than 7,000 meals for those in need.

“At that point, I think we were only being told to avoid gatherings of over 100 people, so not the situation we are in today,” Arroyo explained. “But I saw on their website where they needed more volunteers, especially because schools and some of the other places had already shut down, and they were going to be creating some breakfast and lunch programs to help with some local school districts, so I helped out there for a few hours.”

The next weekend, the Spring Branch native was volunteering again, this time giving blood at Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center.

“It was really kind of the same situation,” Arroyo said. “Earlier in the week, I saw online where people were posting about there being a blood shortage, so I googled where to donate blood and scheduled to go donate that weekend.”

The 29-year-old has also made a point of promoting local businesses on his social media feeds, posting videos of himself doing the Southside dance in front of the store and asking others to shop and eat at locally owned restaurants. In fact, the daughter of the owner of one of the stores he visited saw Arroyo’s post and thanked him for spreading his message during these tough times.

Most recently, Arroyo helped raise money through one of his social media posts by promoting donations to Feed the Front Line, which buys meals from local businesses and delivers them to healthcare workers who are risking their lives to help fight the virus.

“People just kept sending me screenshots of their donations, and the last time I checked we were just over $150,” Arroyo explained. “It was great though, because not only do I have friends who are nurses, but Feed the Front Line also helps Ben Taub General Hospital, which is where my dad got treated a couple of months ago. Every time we went there, the nurses were incredibly helpful, and I wanted to give back to try and help them during this time. Even if it is something small, I want to spread the message of helping others and bring out good vibes.”

Despite the ever-changing situation, Arroyo has faith that Houston will persevere, as always.

“Everybody is holding it down together,” Arroyo said. “We are all one community and we are all in this together. Houston has been through catastrophes together, like Hurricane Harvey, but at the end of the day, we always come out of it appreciative of each other and this community. You don’t even have to be a Houstonian; we just take care of each other here.”

Concacaf suspends Concacaf Nations League Finals

At Concacaf our thoughts are with all the communities affected by the spread of COVID-19 at this difficult time. As we continue to assess our competitions scheduled to be played in the coming months, the welfare of everyone involved in football across our region remains our first priority.

Given the ongoing public health situation, and following consultation with FIFA regarding the international football calendar, we have made the decision to suspend the Concacaf Nations League Finals, which was scheduled for June 4th – 7th 2020 in the Houston and Dallas areas.

The event, which includes the Costa Rica, Honduras, Mexico and USA men’s national teams, will be rescheduled to take place at a later date in venues to be determined. This will be confirmed following further discussions with FIFA regarding the remaining international windows in the football calendar, and will obviously be subject to public health authorities deeming it safe for professional sports events to resume.

Additionally, following the same considerations and discussions with FIFA, we have made the decision to suspend the Road to Gold Cup qualification matches scheduled in the June international window and the Flow Caribbean Club Championship scheduled for May. We will discuss with stakeholders format and scheduling options for these matches and communicate our plans in due course.

We are grateful to fans across the region for their continued support for these events. In the case of the Concacaf Nations League Finals, fans who purchased tickets via Ticketmaster, SeatGeek or AXS will receive refunds automatically. Fans who purchased tickets directly at the stadium box office or through third party vendors should contact those organizations directly for more details regarding the refund process.

BBVA Stadium Suite provides inclusive guest experience for all fans

In celebration of World Autism Awareness Day, BBVA Stadium and KultureCity celebrate the first-year anniversary since opening the Family Suite, which features a Sensory Room and a Mother’s Room to accommodate fans during all of our events.

Located in the northeast corner of the stadium outside of Section 220, fans have access to the first sensory-inclusive facility in Major League Soccer.

“We take great pride in creating the most welcoming and inclusive atmosphere possible for all events at BBVA Stadium,” Stadium Executive Vice President and General Manager Juan Rodriguez said when the room opened. “The Mothers Room will provide a private and comfortable space for women to care for their young children, and the Sensory Room affords fans with sensory needs the opportunity to step away if the sights and sounds inside the stadium become too much for them. We’re very grateful to the experts at KultureCity for their assistance in creating the space and training our staff.”

The Sensory Room was designed and installed in cooperation with KultureCity, the nation’s leading nonprofit dedicated to fight for inclusion and acceptance of all individuals. KultureCity advocates for those with sensory challenges such as autism and PTSD, just to name a few, and provides training and equipment to public and private spaces in order to create an inclusive experience for everyone.

“By recognizing this growing need and wanting to do something about it, they are truly putting their fans and guests first so that everyone regardless of their disabilities or sensory needs can be accepted and included,” KultureCity co-founder Julian Maha, M.D. said last year. “This is great for the City of Houston and for Major League Soccer in general.”

In addition to the Sensory Room itself, the stadium provides sensory bags created by KultureCity to guests who visit the space. BBVA Stadium and Houston Dynamo and Dash employees participated in sensory awareness training in order to understand how best to serve fans with unique needs and concerns.

The Mothers Room features seating for parent and child, as well as power outlets, a changing station and a television so mothers and children won’t miss a moment of game action.

BBVA Classic between Houston Dynamo and Cruz Azul postponed

The BBVA Classic between the Houston Dynamo and LigaMX side Cruz Azul scheduled for Friday, March 27 at BBVA Stadium has been postponed, the Club announced today.

The decision to postpone the match was made after consultation with Major League Soccer following the League’s announcement earlier today to suspend play for 30 days as a precaution due to the developments surrounding COVID-19 in the region and internationally.

The match was organized in partnership with Sports Marketing Monterrey, and the Club will work with the promoter to determine a new date. Information regarding the new date will be shared at the appropriate time.

For fans who have purchased tickets through any outlet other than HoustonDynamo.com, BBVAStadium.com or AXS.com, the Club advises them to contact the customer service line for the place where they purchased their tickets.

Major League Soccer has suspended all games, effective immediately, for 30 days, the league announced Thursday as it continues to assess the impact of COVID-19 (the coronavirus).

Major League Soccer has suspended match play for 30 days, effective immediately, as the league continues to assess the impact of COVID-19 with its medical task force and public health officials.

At the appropriate time, the league and clubs will communicate plans for the continuation of the 2020 season and update the status of league events.

“Our clubs were united today in the decision to temporarily suspend our season – based on the advice and guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC), and other public health authorities, and in the best interest of our fans, players, officials and employees,” said MLS Commissioner Don Garber. “We’d like to thank our fans for their continued support during this challenging time.”

The MLS announcement comes in the wake of the NBA suspending its season on Wednesday night. Prior to the suspension of the MLS season, two MLS matches scheduled for March 21 had already been postponed in Seattle and San Jose as measures are taken to contain COVID-19, which to date has seen over 1,000 confirmed cases in the U.S.

Earlier this week, eMLS Cup, which was scheduled to take place on March 21 in Austin, was postponed following the cancelation of South by Southwest.

Houston to Host Semifinals of First-Ever Concacaf Nations League in June

The Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (Concacaf) announced today that Houston will host the semifinals of the inaugural Concacaf Nations League in a cross-town doubleheader on Thursday, June 4. BBVA Stadium will host one of the two semifinal matches, with the other taking place at NRG Stadium as part of a double-header in the city of Houston.

The Final and third-place matches will both take place at AT&T Stadium in Arlington on Sunday, June 7.

matches, which will feature Costa Rica, Honduras, Mexico and the United States, will serve to crown the first-ever champion of a competition created to provide high quality competitive football for all 41 Concacaf Member Associations, and maximize the official match dates available within the FIFA international calendar.

In the inaugural edition, the Semifinals will be played across two venues in Houston on Thursday, June 4, with Honduras vs United States taking place in BBVA Stadium, followed by Mexico vs Costa Rica at NRG Stadium. The Semifinal matchups were determined by the outcome of group stage play in September, October and November with the four League A winners qualifying for this eagerly anticipated Finals.

The third-place match and the Final will take place at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, TX, on Sunday, June 7. The four matches are scheduled to take place during the June FIFA match window.

Houston is a remarkably diverse city, boasting fans from the four competing nations, all of whom will be able to enjoy the first-ever Concacaf Nations League Finals matches in two world-class stadiums.

BBVA Stadium, home of the Houston Dynamo, one of Major League Soccer’s most storied clubs, has hosted high-profile matches since it’s inauguration in 2012, including Concacaf Champions League and Gold Cup clashes. AT&T Stadium, the 80,000-seat stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys, has also hosted top-level soccer competitions in the past, including four editions of the Gold Cup, numerous Mexican National Team U.S. Tour matches and international club soccer events. The Dallas area is a hotbed for soccer in the country, and those fans are sure to enjoy the Final, as well as the third-place match, in what should be a thrilling doubleheader.

The three venues are state of the art facilities and have hosted some of the country’s most important sporting and entertainment events, such as the Super Bowl, Copa America Centenario, WrestleMania, NBA All-Star Game and college football championship and bowl games.

Due to the ongoing response to Thursday’s water main break in Houston, fans attending tomorrow’s sold-out Houston Dynamo match will be allowed to bring sealed water bottles up to 32 oz. into BBVA Stadium.

Outside food and beverage items are typically not permitted inside BBVA Stadium, although fans can bring in empty clear bottles up to 32 oz. An exception to that policy has been made for tomorrow’s match because all water fountains will be unavailable.

Additionally, all water and sodas at BBVA Stadium at tomorrow’s match will be sold in bottles and cans, rather than poured from soda fountains. Beer will continue to be available on tap, since it was brewed and sealed in kegs before Thursday’s water main incident.

All of the food items prepared for the match by the stadium’s concessionaire, Levy Restaurants, have been and are being prepared in compliance with the boiled-water regulations stipulated by the City of Houston. Levy and BBVA Stadium have also brought in bagged ice for Saturday’s match.

Saturday’s match between the Dynamo and the LA Galaxy is Opening Day presentes by BBVA, and was announced as a sellout earlier this afternoon. The match is scheduled for a 2:30 p.m. CDT kickoff.

Houston Dynamo to host Cruz Azul on March 27 at BBVA Stadium

As part of the SocioMX Tour, the Houston Dynamo will host LigaMX power, Cruz Azul on March 27 at BBVA Stadium, the two clubs and SMM Sports & Entertainment announced today.

Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. CT on Friday, March 27. Tickets for the match will go on sale to the general public on Tuesday, Feb. 11 at 10 a.m. CT, with individual prices starting at $25. Tickets will be available online at HoustonDynamo.com, by phone at 713-276-GOAL or at the BBVA Stadium box office.

This year’s contest also pits two former teammates against each other on the touchline. Robert Siboldi, the current manager for Cruz Azul, spent the 1995-2000 seasons with Tigres UANL as a goalkeeper, making 109 league appearances. Dynamo head coach, Tab Ramos, spent a year and a half on loan with Tigres during the 1994-1996 seasons, appearing in 35 games as a midfielder and scoring twice.

“We are very fortunate and look forward to hosting one of LigaMX’s giants in our stadium,” said coach Ramos. “It is certainly a treat for our fans and a great challenge for us as a team. I am also looking forward to seeing my friend and great coach, Robert Siboldi, leading such an important team.”

BBVA Stadium installs new high-definition LED video displays from Daktronics

The Houston Dynamo and Houston Dash partnered with Daktronics, the world’s leader in large-scale video display systems, to further enhance the in-stadium guest experience by installing four new high-definition LED displays at BBVA Stadium, the companies announced today.

“Our club’s goal of growing the game in Houston requires that we continue to invest in all aspects of our business, both on and off the pitch,” said Houston Dynamo President John Walker. “These new video boards will be immediately noticeable to Dynamo and Dash fans and will greatly enhance the experience for all fans at BBVA Stadium for years to come.”

The stadium’s main video board will measure 34 feet high by 73 feet wide while the two lateral videos will measure 15 feet high by 26 feet wide, all three ultimately doubling in size. The displays will feature HD15 pixel layouts, the leading technology for sporting applications with viewing distances for crisp, clear imagery visible to every seat in the stadium.

“The new video technology at BBVA Stadium is going to be a significant upgrade in both size and resolution,” said Dan Fjeldheim, Daktronics sales representative. “The fan experience will be lifted to a whole new level and we are grateful for the opportunity to provide the new displays for the stadium.”

America’s most international stadium will now be surrounded on the north, east and west sides as well as the exterior marquee by high-resolution LED field boards to integrate immersive, synchronized content throughout Houston Dynamo and Houston Dash home matches, as well as international soccer matches and college football games.

This project is just the latest example of an ongoing effort by the Club’s ownership group to improve the game-day experience at BBVA Stadium. Earlier this year, the facility underwent a multi-million dollar renovation to deliver Free Fan WiFi, presented by BBVA, with becoming the first MLS stadium to install the new WiFi 6 technology. BBVA Stadium to host Concacaf Women’s Olympic Qualifying Group Games

HOUSTON (Thursday, Nov. 7, 2019) - BBVA Stadium was selected to host the U.S. Women’s National Team as part of Group A in the 2020 Concacaf Women’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament, the confederation announced earlier today.

Houston Dynamo and Houston Dash Season Ticket Members will have access to an exclusive presale opportunity in the near future. Additional information on tickets and kickoff times will be announced at a later date.

The tournament will send two nations to the 2020 Summer Olympics in Japan. Houston will be one of three cities in the U.S. to host the tournament, which will be held from January 28 through February 9 featuring eight nations divided into two groups.

The USWNT will join Costa Rica, Panama and Haiti in Group A. H-E-B Park in Edinburg, Texas will host Canada, Mexico, Jamaica and St. Kitts & Nevis in Group B play. The semifinal and final will take place in Southern California.

After round-robin play within the groups, the top four finishers will meet in the semifinals, with the winners of those matches qualifying for the Olympics and for the tournament championship game. The semifinals will be held on Friday, Feb. 7 and the championship game will be played on Sunday, Feb. 9.

Public Safety Live Exercises Take Place At BBVA Stadium

On Sunday, Oct. 6, officers from various agencies working under the regional radiological / nuclear detection program - known as Securing the Cities - conducted several live exercises with assistance from Houston Dynamo and BBVA Stadium staff.

Using advanced radiation detection equipment, officers are able to sweep a venue for hidden threats as well as monitor pedestrian and vehicular traffic in and around the area for possible suspicious activities. Through this process, any illicit threat materials can be intercepted prior to their use in a public venue such as a sporting event.

"Public-private partnerships with area organizations such as the Houston Dynamo and BBVA Stadium are key to proactive public safety initiatives such as this one and allow us the ability to test and hone our procedures," said Charlie Johnson with the Mayor’s Office of Public Safety and Homeland Security. "Our regional approach to planning and exercise helps all of us prepare ahead of an incident. These types of exercises are just one of the many ways in which law enforcement officers throughout the region are working on keeping its citizens safe."

“Any time we are able to bring in our local, state, or federal public safety partners, it is a big advantage for our safety and security program. Club América advanced to the semifinal with a 6-5 penalty shootout victory over the Houston Dynamo Wednesday evening at BBVA Stadium after the teams played to a 1-1 draw in regulation. América forward Nicolás Benedetti put the visitors ahead in the 73rd minute before Houston equalized through U.S. soccer legend DaMarcus Beasley in the 85th. Mexican national team star Giovani dos Santos, newly signed to Las Aguilas, converted the winning penalty in the seventh round.

Later Wednesday night, Tigres downed a determined Real Salt Lake side 1-0 thanks to a goal from star striker Eduardo Vargas in the 57th minute. BBVA Compass Stadium will close out 2018 by hosting the last game of the 2018 Tour Águila, presented by PRIMETIME Sports and Club América, on Saturday, December 29. For this special occasion, Club América will face Club Santos Laguna, the current Liga MX champions. Both clubs currently stand on top of the 2018 Apertura Liga MX and are strong candidates for the title.

The match is scheduled for a 4:30 p.m. CST kickoff at BBVA Compass Stadium, home of the Houston Dynamo of Major League Soccer. There will be a Fan Fest prior to the game outside the stadium consisting of live music, food, team mascots, championship trophies, and autographs from team legends.

Tickets will be available to the general public on Friday, November 16 at 10 a.m. CST starting at $35, with general admission tickets for kids under 12 available for $20. John Walker Named President of Business Operations for Houston Dynamo, Dash and BBVA Compass Stadium

The Houston Dynamo and Dash named veteran sports business executive John Walker as the club’s President of Business Operations, the club announced today. Dynamo and Dash majority owner Gabriel Brener introduced Walker at a news conference this afternoon at BBVA Compass Stadium.

Walker brings more than 30 years of experience in the sports industry to the role, including the last three as Executive Vice President for Business Operations with the NBA’s Memphis Grizzlies. He also brings experience in Major League Baseball, college athletics and with third-party ticketing companies.

As President of Business Operations, Walker will oversee all aspects of the club’s business operations and all of its entities, including the Dynamo and Dash as well as BBVA Compass Stadium and Houston Sports Park. He will also be responsible for maintaining strong business relationships with the Dynamo-Dash Youth Club, Rio Grande Valley FC and the Brazos Valley Cavalry.

“I’m proud to welcome John Walker to the Houston Dynamo and Dash. He is a highly respected leader in the sports industry whose breadth and depth of experience in multiple sports, leagues, and areas of the business will help our club continue to grow,” Brener said. “He has proven the ability to not only generate tremendous financial results, but to build a team-focused culture that leads to success across an organization. Throughout his career, Walker has progressively taken on larger leadership roles in professional sports and entertainment with an emphasis on identifying new revenue streams and growing existing ones, introducing new technology and creating a winning culture.

With the Grizzlies, Walker held many of the same responsibilities, overseeing all aspects of the team’s business, including ticket sales, service and operations; sponsorship sales and activation; arena operations; marketing and communications; human resources; finance; analytics and customer relationship management; and community relations.

Under Walker’s leadership, the Grizzlies business operations unit set franchise records in ticket sales and total revenue, and he helped the club sell its first-ever jersey partnership along with other key partnerships. He also led the effort to acquire a new G-League franchise in 2017 and the launch of an NBA2K e-sports franchise.

"I'm humbled to have the opportunity to build upon the legacy that Oliver Luck started and Chris Canetti developed with the Dynamo and Dash organization. A data-focused leader, Walker led the Grizzlies’ implementation of a customer relationship management (CRM) tool to streamline the team’s ticketing, sponsorship and marketing efforts with a focus toward return on investment. He also worked closely with the team president to cultivate and manage key relationships with team ownership, basketball operations leadership, local elected officials and other key stakeholders within the Memphis community.

"I'm extremely grateful to the staff and ownership at the Memphis Grizzlies for the opportunity over the last three seasons,” Walker continued. “At the same time, my family and I are very excited to be relocating to Houston, becoming active in the community and taking advantage of all that the region has to offer."

A native of Morgantown, West Virginia, Walker earned his bachelor’s degree from West Virginia University and a Master’s of Sports Management from the University of Oklahoma. He started his career in sports at OU, working as a ticket manager in the Sooners’ athletic department from 1990-95 before joining the Kansas City Royals’ ticket office as Director of Ticket and Revenue Operations.

Walker made his first move into the NBA with the Phoenix Suns in 2000 as the team’s Vice President of Business Development and was promoted to Sr. Vice President in 2005. In those roles, he oversaw sponsorship, led the efforts to create new revenue streams and created the Suns Sixth Man program, a holistic season ticket service initiative designed to increase fan engagement and affinity.

After a decade in the Valley of the Sun, Walker transitioned into a different aspect of the sports industry in 2010, venturing into third-party ticketing efforts as the President and CEO of Tickets.com. Under his leadership, the company increased revenues three consecutive years and signed groundbreaking contracts with five Major League Baseball clubs along with the America’s Cup and Southampton FC of the English Premier League. He served as the President of PrimeSport for six months in 2014 before being recruited to the Grizzlies, and in that time he improved the company’s e-commerce efforts, initiated a dynamic ticket pricing model and negotiated new contracts with two MLB clubs.

While with the Grizzlies, Walker served as Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors for Make-A-Wish’s Mid-South Chapter. He and his wife Lisa have four daughters: Brandi, Brooke, Audrey and Dakota.

In addition to the matches at BBVA Compass Stadium, Houston’s NRG Stadium will host a Quarterfinal doubleheader on Saturday, June 29, making Houston one of only two markets with a pair of host venues in the 2019 Gold Cup. The Los Angeles area will also have two venues in the tournament, with matches scheduled for the Rose Bowl and Banc of California Stadium.

That afternoon, the stadium will host a friendly match between two of the most popular club sides in Mexico, followed by a Texas Southern University football game that evening.

The day will start with a friendly match between Liga MX powers Tigres UANL and UNAM Pumas at 2:00 p.m. CST (TICKETS). That match, brought to Houston in partnership with SPD Sports, will feature two clubs who have combined for 13 Liga MX championships and six Copa MX titles. That evening, the Texas Southern Tigers will play host to Arkansas-Pine Bluff at 7:30 p.m. for Senior Night (TICKETS).

Tickets for the Tigres-Pumas match will go on sale to the general public on Friday, October 19 at 10 a.m. CDT, with prices starting at $39. Houston Dynamo and Dash season ticket members will have an exclusive 48-hour presale opportunity beginning Wednesday, October 17 at 10 a.m.

Tigres’ six championships and recent success have placed the team amongst the top teams in Liga MX. BBVA Compass Stadium will participate in its fourth consecutive CONCACAF Gold Cup next summer when the venue plays host to a group stage doubleheader on Friday, June 21. BBVA Compass Stadium will host Group C for the crucial second matchday in the three-match round-robin format, the confederation announced earlier today.

Tickets go on sale to the general public Tuesday, Oct. 23, at 10 a.m. CT through BBVACompassStadium.com and at the BBVA Compass Stadium ticket office (open Monday-Friday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.). Houston Dynamo and Dash Season Ticket Members will receive an exclusive presale opportunity to purchase tickets prior to the general public.

Group C is headlined by Honduras, one of four seeded nations for this tournament, which will make its third appearance (2013, 2017 and 2019) at BBVA Compass Stadium for a match in group play. This is the third consecutive edition of the tournament in which BBVA Compass Stadium will host the second matchday of group play. In the three-game round-robin format of group play, Matchday Two represents a key opportunity for teams to take control of first place in the group or secure a spot in the knockout rounds.

Although official rosters for the tournament will not be released until much closer to its beginning, Honduras are likely to be led by a trio of Houston Dynamo stars in midfielder Boniek Garcia and forwards Romell Quioto and Alberth Elis. Garcia has earned 125 caps for Los Catrachos, while Quioto has earned 38 caps and scored eight goals for his country and the 22-year-old Elis has already been capped 27 times and has seven goals for his national team.

BBVA Compass Stadium made its debut during the 2013 edition of the tournament that saw El Salvador defeat Haiti off a set piece goal in the final 15 minutes of play. Honduras fell to Trinidad and Tobago 2-0 in the finale of the doubleheader.

Two years later Jamaica began its run to the tournament championship game with its first victory of the tournament in the 2015 edition of the CONCACAF Gold Cup at BBVA Compass Stadium. Costa Rica and El Salvador played to a 1-1 draw in the final game of the evening.

The 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup brought two of the highest ranked teams in the region in Costa Rica and Honduras to BBVA Compass Stadium. Costa Rica and Canada settled for a 1-1 draw and Honduras was awarded a 3-0 victory after French Guiana fielded an ineligible player.

Chick-Fil-A will have one portable stand selling their popular chicken sandwiches and spicy chicken sandwiches, along with waffle chips and chocolate chunk cookies, and will be located on the south concourse in the Taste of EaDo are of the stadium, just outside of Section 137.

El partido entre Atlético Nacional y América de Cali esta programado para las 8 p.m. CDT el viernes 20 de Julio, así lo anunció hoy la directiva del estadio. El evento es presentado por SPD Sports.

Este amistoso es parte de la celebración oficial de la ciudad Houston Colombian Fest 2018. La festividad celebra la independencia de Colombia – el 20 de julio – con programación en el centro de la ciudad con una gran variedad de comida, arte, actividades para niños y música en la plaza localizada en Sam Houston Park. Este es el decimoquinto año de la celebración que se celebrara el domingo, 22 de julio en el centro de la ciudad espacial.

Two of the most popular and successful soccer clubs in Colombia will face off on Colombian Independence Day at BBVA Compass Stadium. Atlético Nacional will face América de Cali on Friday, July 20 at 8:00 p.m. CDT, stadium officials announced today. Clasico Colombianowill be presented by SPD Sports.

The match is an official part of Houston Colombian Fest 2018 activities Colombian Fest celebrates Colombian Independence Day – July 20 – with an all-day event in Downtown Houston packed with food, arts, crafts, kid-friendly activities and plenty of music on the main stage. This marks the 15th year for the event, and it is scheduled for Sunday, July 22 at Sam Houston Park in Downtown Houston.

“We are excited to partner with SPD Sports to bring two world-class teams to Houston to celebrate such an important day in the Colombian community, said BBVA Compass Stadium General Manager Juan Rodriguez. “We take great pride in serving the whole Houston community by bringing diverse and wide-ranging sporting events to the city, and we are eager to welcome Colombian fans, as well as all fans of the beautiful game, to BBVA Compass Stadium once again.”

Atlético Nacional and América de Cali are two of Colombia’s most historic teams, with a rich rivalry that dates back to 1948 when América defeated Atlético, 3-0. The rivalry escalated as both teams became frequent opponents in championship matches and knockout matches in international tournaments.

Nacional have won La Categoría Primera A in Colombia on 16 occasions and Copa Libertadores twice, the most recent on 2016 which earned them a spot in the FIFA Club World Cup. In 2016, the club was part of a story which reached far beyond the bounds of soccer when their opponent in the Copa Sudamericana final, Chapecoense of Brazil, lost its entire team in a tragic plane crash on their way to Colombia for the first leg. Nacional was awarded the FIFA Fair Play Award that year after they asked for CONMEBOL to award Chapecoense the 2016 Copa Sudamericana title.

América have won 13 league titles and have advanced to the finals of the Copa Libertadores on four occasions. Houston Dynamo head coach, Wilmer Cabrera, played for Los Diablos Rojos for seven years and helped the team lift the championship trophy three times. After years of struggle, América returned to La Categoría Primera A in 2016; and in 2017 they qualified for their first international tournament in nearly a decade when they qualified for the 2018 Copa Sudamericana.

2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup returns to BBVA Compass Stadium

Houston will host not one, but two rounds of matches in the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup, the Confederation of North and Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) announced today in partnership with the Harris County – Houston Sports Authority, the Houston Dynamo and Lone Star Sports & Entertainment.

Houston is one of two markets in America with two host venues for the 2019 tournament. BBVA Compass Stadium and NRG Stadium will play host to the prestigious continental soccer tournament next summer.

“We are a major sports destination with the best fans in the nation,” said Harris County – Houston Sports Authority CEO Janis Schmees Burke. “The fact that we have two fabulous venues capable of successfully hosting a Gold Cup match is a true testament to how special our community has become in the global sports realm.”

The Gold Cup is the official national team championship of the region, taking place biannually. The 2019 edition is the first to include an expanded version with 16 teams, allowing more teams from the region to shine on a regional and global stage. As this is the 15th edition of the tournament, a record 15 venues will host matches in 2019.

This marks the fourth consecutive edition of the tournament in which BBVA Compass Stadium will serve as a host venue for the Gold Cup. The facility has been a part of every Gold Cup held since it opened in 2012.

“We are proud to host the CONCACAF Gold Cup at BBVA Compass Stadium for the fourth consecutive tournament,” said Houston Dynamo President Chris Canetti. "We take pride in being the home of soccer in Houston for all fans of the beautiful game, and we are looking forward to what promises to be another outstanding event next summer."

The 2013 matches at the stadium featured Honduras, El Salvador, Trinidad and Tobago, and Haiti. Two years later, fans witnessed back-to-back stoppage time goals in two thrilling contests as Jamaica defeated Canada and Costa Rica drew with El Salvador in downtown Houston. Then in 2017, teenage sensation Alphonso Davies led Canada to a draw with Costa Rica while Houston Dynamo stars Alberth Elis and Romell Quioto led Honduras against French Guiana.

NRG Stadium has been host to the Gold Cup four times previously, most recently in 2011 when it hosted the tournament semifinals. The stadium has also hosted a quarterfinal doubleheader twice in the past.

“We are honored that Houston and NRG Stadium were selected to host the 2019 edition of the CONCACAF Gold Cup,” said Jamey Rootes, president of Lone Star Sports & Entertainment. “Since our first international soccer match in Houston in 2003, the sport has grown tremendously in this region and Houston has become one of the leading soccer markets in America. This is a great opportunity for soccer fans to see some of the world’s best teams play right here in Houston. We look forward to once again welcoming the soccer world to our community next June."

The United States topped Panama 1-0 and Mexico defeated Honduras 2-0 in the 2011 semifinals in Houston, setting up an epic tournament final. In 2007, the quarterfinal doubleheader in Houston saw Mexico defeat Costa Rica 1-0 and tiny Guadeloupe upset Honduras 2-1. In 2005 it was Colombia, an invited guest from South America, topping Mexico 2-1 and Panama defeating South Africa – another invitee – 5-3 on penalties to advance to the semifinals. NRG Stadium has also hosted group stage matches in the 2005, 2007 and 2009 tournaments.

Eight Gold Cup host markets – including Houston – have been announced as the United Bid’s final candidate host cities for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The six national teams that participated in the 2018 FIFA World Cup Hexagonal qualifier round -- Costa Rica, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, Trinidad and Tobago, and the United States – are automatically qualified to the 2019 Gold Cup. The 10 additional participating nations in the 2019 Gold Cup will qualify through CONCACAF Nations League Qualifiers, to be played on FIFA match dates in September, October, and November of 2018, and March of 2019.

BBVA Compass Stadium to Host U.S. Open of Football Ultimate Final on July 19

Texas is the spiritual home of football, so what better place to host the championship game of the first-ever U.S. Open of Football than in the Lone Star State? BBVA Compass Stadium will play host to the Ultimate Final of the inaugural U.S. Open of Football on Thursday, July 19 at 7 p.m. CDT, stadium officials announced today.

The U.S. Open of Football is a single-elimination flag football tournament organized by the American Flag Football League (AFFL) spanning the entire country. The 132-team field is comprised of 128 teams of amateurs, broken down into seven regions, and four teams of former professional football players. The 7-on-7 tournament promises high-scoring offensive fireworks with non-stop action. For official tournament rules, click here.

“We are extremely excited to host the inaugural U.S Open of Football Ultimate Final at BBVA Compass Stadium. The 128 amateur teams will compete for the crown of America’s Champion, who will square off with the winner of the four-team professional division in the Ultimate Championship. The winner of the Ultimate Final will earn a $1 million grand prize.

The four pro teams are anticipated to be led by stars such as former No. 1 pick Michael Vick, All-Pro wide receiver Chad Ochocinco, former Houston Texans running back Justin Forsett, Olympic Gold Medalist Michael Johnson and former NBA stars Nate Robinson and Carlos Boozer.

BBVA Compass Dynamo Charities Cup Features Houston Dynamo & CF Monterrey in MoneyGram SocioMX Tour on June 29

The 2018 BBVA Compass Dynamo Charities Cup will feature the Houston Dynamo and C.F. Monterrey in the second match of the MoneyGram SocioMX Tour, the two clubs and Sports Marketing Monterrey announced today.

The match is scheduled for Friday, June 29 and kickoff is set for 8 p.m. CDT. Tickets for the match will go on sale to the general public on Monday, April 30 at 10 a.m. CDT, with individual prices starting at $34. All Houston Dynamo Season Ticket Members automatically receive their tickets for the annual Charities Cup match. Additionally, Members will have access to an exclusive presale window from Friday, April 27 at 10 a.m. CDT through Sunday, April 29 at 11:59 p.m. in which they can purchase additional tickets before they go on sale to the general public.

The BBVA Compass Dynamo Charities Cup is an annual event bringing prominent international teams to Houston to raise money for charity. A portion of the proceeds from the match are donated to a different charitable cause each year by Dynamo Charities, the charitable arm of the Houston Dynamo presented by the Halliburton Charitable Foundation. The charitable beneficiary for this year’s match will be announced in the coming weeks.

The MoneyGram SocioMX Tour is the highest impact tournament in the United States with teams from the Mexican league. In previous years, the Tour has featured the following teams: Club America, Club Atlas, Cruz Azul FC, CF Monterrey, Monarcas Morelia, Club Puebla, Pumas UNAM, Santos Laguna, Club Tijuana, Toluca FC.

This year’s edition will mark the 10th anniversary of the BBVA Compass Dynamo Charities Cup, and in a nod to the event’s history the Dynamo will take on their opponent from the inaugural Charities Cup from 2009. That year, the Dynamo hosted Los Rayados on Oct. 11, 2009 at Robertson Stadium, emerging with a hard-fought 2-1 victory behind goals from Geoff Cameron and Dominic Oduro.

Monterrey is currently third in the Liga MX table with one match remaining in the 2018 Clausura tournament. CF Monterrey is a widely popular team among Hispanic soccer fans and has won six Liga MX first division championships and four CONCACAF championships in recent years.

The Dynamo are 2-2-2 through the first two months of the Major League Soccer season, including a resounding 5-1 win over Toronto FC on Saturday afternoon. Led by forward Alberth Elis, who joined the Dynamo on loan from Monterrey in 2017 and was signed to a full transfer in December, the Dynamo are among the most dangerous teams in MLS with 14 goals through six games. The Dynamo have been particularly deadly at home over the last two seasons, posting a 14-3-4 record in league play at BBVA Compass Stadium since the start of the 2017 season.

BBVA Compass Stadium and Levy Cares will host a fundraiser for Levy manager John Sanborn, who suffered a tragic accident and severe brain trauma earlier this year. A member of the Levy team at BBVA Compass Stadium since day one, Sanborn is a U.S. Army veteran whose team at Levy Restaurants led efforts to feed first responders during Hurricane Harvey. Proceeds from the event will help his family cover ongoing medical expenses.

The event will be held at BBVA Compass Stadium on Sunday, April 22 from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. and attendees are invited to enjoy a delicious meal prepared by the area's finest Chefs from Levy Restaurants, including Chef Eddie Romero of Toyota Center, Chef David Picou of Texas A&M, Chef Natasha Douglas of the George R. Brown Convention Center and BBVA Compass Stadium's very own Chef Nacho Zamora. BBQ, tacos, jambalaya and dessert plates will be available for a $20 donation, or $55 for all three. Kids plate will be available for $6 for kids 10 and under. An auction will also be held for sports memorabilia as well as a raffle for Houston Dynamo and Houston Rockets suite tickets.

Parking will be available in the North Lot, located at the intersection of Prairie St and Dowling. Entry to the event will be through the Honda Gate.

The national teams of El Salvador and Honduras will square off in El Clasico Centroamericano on Saturday, June 2 at 7:00 p.m. CDT at at BBVA Compass Stadium, stadium officials announced today. The match will be presented by Planet Futbol.

“This is an amazing opportunity for our soccer enthusiast to have two world-class teams at BBVA Compass Stadium,” said BBVA Compass Stadium General Manager Juan Rodriguez. “The two fan bases of these teams are two large parts of the diversity of the Houston community, and we are very excited at the anticipated turnout.”

Tickets for the match will go on sale Tuesday, April 3 at 10:00 a.m. CDT, with prices starting at $30. Dynamo and Dash members will have an exclusive pre-sale starting on Friday, March 30. This will be the second time for these long-time rivals to face off in Houston. In 2011, Los Cuscaltecos and Los Catrachos played at Robertson Stadium as both teams prepared for the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup. The game ended with a 2-2 draw, with Carlos Costly and Jerry Bengston scoring for Honduras while Rodolfo Zelaya and Rudi Corrales finding the net for El Salvador.

Houston Dash to host Chicago Red Stars in home opener on March 25

The Houston Dash will open their 2018 season against the Chicago Red Stars at 4 p.m. CDT on Sunday, March 25 at BBVA Compass Stadium, the National Women’s Soccer League announced today.

This will be the third consecutive year in which the clubs will open the season against one another at BBVA Compass Stadium. Houston was victorious in both encounters as forward Rachel Daly sparked a 3-1 comeback in 2016 and added a goal that topped the SportsCenter Top 10 in the 2-0 victory in 2017. Last year’s home opener also saw forward Kealia Ohai score her 21st goal for the club, picking up where she left off in 2016.

This will be the first opportunity for fans to see forward Christen Press, who was acquired from Chicago on Jan. 18. In four seasons with Chicago, Press scored 36 goals in 68 appearances. She has earned NWSL Best XI accolades in each of the last three seasons and was a Second XI selection in her first season, 2014. Press and Becky Sauerbrunn are the only players to have earned Best XI honors in each of the last three years.

Houston will host the U.S. Soccer Female Player of the Year, Julie Ertz, and the NWSL Most Valuable Player, Sam Kerr, who will make her debut witch Chicago after a trade between Sky Blue FC, Chicago and Houston prior to the 2018 NWSL College Draft.

USA Rugby returns to BBVA Compass Stadium to face Scotland June 16

The excitement and energy of international rugby returns to BBVA Compass Stadium on Saturday, June 16 when the United States Men’s National Team hosts Scotland in a premiere test match, stadium officials announced today. The match is the second leg of the Emirates Airline Summer Series for the Eagles.

The weighted matchup is scheduled for an 8 p.m. kickoff and will be televised nationally on CBS Sports Networks and streamed live worldwide on The Rugby Channel.

The U.S. Women’s National Team (USWNT) will face Mexico in a friendly match at 12:30 p.m. CT on Sunday, April 8 at BBVA Compass Stadium, U.S. Soccer announced today.

Tickets go on sale Wednesday, Feb. 14, at 10 a.m. CT through BBVACompassStadium.com and at the BBVA Compass Stadium ticket office (open Monday-Friday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.). Houston Dash Season Ticket Members will receive an exclusive presale opportunity to purchase tickets prior to the general public. FOX will broadcast the match, the fifth USWNT game at BBVA Compass Stadium and eighth in Houston. The USWNT is undefeated in the Bayou City and return to Texas where they claimed the 2016 CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying Championship.

The USWNT features Houston Dash goalkeeper Jane Campbell and forward Christen Press. Campbell made her debut with the senior national team in the USWNT’s last visit to BBVA Compass Stadium on April 9 in a 5-1 victory over Russia. The Houston Dynamo will host Atlanta United FC on Opening Day presented by Pepsi Zero Sugar on Saturday, March 3 at BBVA Compass Stadium, the club and Major League Soccer announced today. The match will kick off at 2:30 p.m. CST to launch the 2018 Dynamo season, fueled by 76®.

Dynamo Head Coach Wilmer Cabrera guided the Dynamo to the Western Conference Championship in his first season – the club’s seventh appearance in the Conference Championship in 12 years. The team’s resurgence in 2017 was keyed by a club-record 12 home wins in the regular season.

The 2017 Dynamo showcased an exciting and entertaining style of play as they scored a club-record 57 goals in the regular season, good for fifth in the league, and led the Western Conference with 43 goals at home. The Dynamo averaged better than 2.5 goals per game at home and scored three or more goals eight times.

The Dynamo will return players who accounted for 50 of those 57 goals a year ago, led by 21-year-old forward Alberth Elis, who joined the club on a full transfer a week ago after playing last season on loan from CF Monterrey in Mexico. Alongside the Honduran international will be 24-year-old Mexican forward Erick Torres and 22-year old Colombian forward Mauro Manotas. The three players trio combined for 34 goals last season and became the first trio in Dynamo history to have each scored 10 goals or more in the same season.

Atlanta will be making its inaugural visit to BBVA Compass Stadium. The Five Stripes will seek to bring the success from their debut season, in which they finished fourth in the Eastern Conference with a 15-9-10 record, into their sophomore campaign.

Much like the Dynamo, Atlanta was one of the most entertaining teams in the league a year ago, scoring 70 goals on the year thanks to a free-flowing attacking style. They became just the second expansion team in league history to make the playoffs in their debut season.

Atlanta will also be led on the pitch by a group of exciting young attacking talents headlined by the reigning MLS Newcomer of the Year, Paraguayan midfielder Miguel Almirón, and MLS Best XI forward Josef Martínez, along with U.S. Men’s National Team goalkeeper Brad Guzan and newly-acquired midfielder Darlington Nagbe.

“Atlanta United is a team that has shown from the beginning that they have the intention to be one of the top teams. They have acquired a great coach and great players, and that goes to show that they are committed to do good things,” Cabrera said. “For us, it’s very important to have a good start in the first game of the season at home. It’s critical for us. It’s going to be beautiful, and we are going to try to enjoy the start of the season against a great opponent.”

Houston is 7-1-4 all-time in home openers and 6-2-4 all-time on Opening Day. La Naranja are 5-0-1 in home openers since moving into BBVA Compass Stadium in 2012.

The league also announced that the Dynamo will play at D.C. United on March 17 in what will be United’s home opener. The venue for that game will be announced at a later date, as D.C. United prepares to move into their new home, Audi Field, later this summer. Houston and D.C. have played 24 times, with the Dynamo holding a 14-6-4 advantage in the series.

More Stars Added to Kick In For Houston Roster

More stars from across the soccer and entertainment worlds have been added to the roster for next week’s Kick In For Houston celebrity soccer match, event organizers announced today.

The most recent additions include the starting third baseman for the World Champion Houston Astros, Alex Bregman, and six-time NFL Pro Bowl (and self-proclaimed future Hall of Fame) wide receiver Chad Ochocinco, each of whom confirmed their attendance this week.

After the match was rescheduled to accommodate the Major League Soccer playoffs, Texas native and Seattle Sounders forward Clint Dempsey committed to play in the game, and fellow MLS stars Charlie Davies and Chris Wondolowski also signed on to play. MLS broadcasters such as Alexi Lalas, Kyle Martino, Fernando Fiore and John Strong are also committed to take part in the event.

As America celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month over the next four weeks, BBVA Compass Stadium will be the ideal venue for fans of all backgrounds to celebrate many of the Hispanic culture’s most vital components – family, fun, and fellowship – through live sports as the stadium more than half a dozen professional and international soccer matches.

Beginning this Saturday, Sept. 23, BBVA Compass Stadium will host one Houston Dash match, three Houston Dynamo home MLS matches, the annual BBVA Compass Dynamo Charities Cup, a pair of LigaMX powers, and an international friendly match featuring the El Salvador national team.

Houston-based Latin fusion musical group Gio Chamba will headline the pregame entertainment in the Bud Light Beer Garden, and a Kroger Postgame Fireworks Spectacular set to Latin and Tejano music will cap off the night after the final whistle.

On Thursday, Oct. 5, the Dynamo will step outside of MLS to host top LigaMX side Cruz Azul in the BBVA Compass Dynamo Charities Cup. The game is part of the Moneygram SocioMX tour and will be nationally televised on Univision Deportes Network.

The Dynamo-Cruz Azul match will kick off at 8 p.m., but prior to the main event a team of Dynamo Legends headlined by all-time leading scorer Brian Ching will take on a Univision Legends team headlined by former Mexican National Team star Pavel Pardo. A pair of Mexican powers face off on Saturday, Oct. 7 when Tigres UANL take on Monarcas Morelia at 5 p.m. in a match presented by SPD Sports.

Tigres’ five championships and recent success have placed the team amongst the top teams in Liga MX. Los Auriazules may feature stars such as FW André-Pierre Gignac, GK Nahuel Guzmán and Mexican international MF Jürgen Damm. Tigres recent success includes winning Liga MX twice in the last two years and reaching the final of international tournaments Copa Libertadores and CONCACAF Champions League.

Monarcas Morelia is one of Mexico’s most historic teams. La Monarquía will be making their first visit to BBVA Compass Stadium since 2010 when they played against the Houston Dynamo in the SuperLiga semifinals. Morelia won the Mexican league in Invierno (Fall) 2000, and also won Copa MX in 2013 and Supecopa MX in 2014. Morelia may feature Peruvian international, FW Raúl Ruidíaz, who was the top goalscorer in Liga MX for the last two seasons and was named Liga MX’s best forward in 2016-17.

The following afternoon, an international friendly takes the spotlight as the national teams of El Salvador and Canada will square off at in a match presented by Planet Fútbol.

El Salvador may feature stars such as San Jose Earthquakes midfielder Darwin Cerén, captain Andrés Flores and third all-time leading goalscorer Rodolfo Zelaya. The ninth annual BBVA Compass Dynamo Charities Cup will be broadcast nationally for the first time in an effort to help raise as much money as possible for this year's nonprofit beneficiary: the Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund established by Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner and Harris County Judge Ed Emmett.

BBVA Compass and the Dynamo have set a goal of raising $100,000 from the event, the organizers announced today, and tickets are now on sale. The BBVA Compass Dynamo Charities Cup is an annual exhibition match in which the Dynamo take on a team from outside of Major League Soccer, with proceeds benefitting a local nonprofit organization. This year, the Dynamo will host top Mexican club Cruz Azul at 8 p.m. CDT on Thursday, October 5, at BBVA Compass Stadium.

The BBVA Compass Dynamo Charities Cup marks the two organizations’ second wave of activities in support of Hurricane Harvey relief. The Dynamo, Major League Soccer and MLS WORKS committed $1 million to relief efforts last week.

The Houston Dynamo and Houston Dash home games scheduled for this Saturday and Sunday at BBVA Compass Stadium have been postponed due to the pending arrival of Hurricane Harvey, which is projected to affect the Greater Houston area over the weekend.

After closely monitoring the weather forecasts over the last 48 hours in consultation with Dynamo, Dash and BBVA Compass Stadium management, Major League Soccer and the National Women’s Soccer League made the decision to reschedule the games in the interest of fan, public, staff and player safety.

The Dynamo game against Sporting Kansas City, which was scheduled for an 8 p.m. kickoff on Saturday night at BBVA Compass Stadium, has been rescheduled to Wednesday, October 11 and will kick off at 7 p.m. CDT.

A makeup date for the Dash game against the North Carolina Courage, originally scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff on Sunday evening, has not been finalized at this time.

"Under the circumstances, the clear and obvious decision is to reschedule these matches. The most important thing is the safety of our community,” said Dynamo and Dash president Chris Canetti. “I appreciate the support of MLS, NWSL, Sporting Kansas City and the North Carolina Courage in working through this difficult situation with us. The Gold Cup returns to Houston with a doubleheader featuring Costa Rica vs. Canada in match one and Honduras vs. French Guiana in the second match on Tuesday, July 11 at BBVA Compass Stadium.

Among the preliminary roster inclusion is five members of the Houston Dynamo, three of which are scheduled to play in the Houston group stage:

Midfielders: Oscar Boniek García (Hondouras)

Forwards: Alberth Elis (Hondouras), Romell Quioto (Hondouras); Erick Torres (Mexico)

Defender: Adolfo Machado (Panama)

In accordance with the Competition Regulations, the preliminary rosters submitted are binding and will serve as the basis for the final 23-player lists for each participating member association. As in past years, teams that qualify for the quarterfinals of this year's Gold Cup will be permitted to amend their 23-player roster following the group stage, by replacing up to six players with new players from the 40-player provisional rosters published today.

Final 23-player rosters will be announced by CONCACAF in the final week of June. After that official announcement, only injury-related changes are allowed, until 24 hours before each team’s first match of the group stage, at which point rosters are final for the group stage. Any injury replacements must come from the preliminary 40-player rosters and must be approved by the Gold Cup Medical Committee.

The 40-player provisional rosters have been selected and submitted by the Participating Member Associations, and are published as such. In order to be eligible to play in Gold Cup, all players are subject and must fully comply with the criteria stipulated in the applicable FIFA and Gold Cup player eligibility regulations.

The 14th edition of the continental championship will begin Friday, July 7 at Red Bull Arena in the New York-New Jersey metropolitan area. That opening double header features a Group A match-up of perennial Central American rivals, Honduras and Costa Rica and 2000 champion Canada facing newcomer French Guiana.

Group B will kick off on July 8, in Nashville, with a rematch of the 2015 Gold Cup third-place match between USA and Panama, followed by Martinique and Nicaragua.

Defending champion Mexico will begin its title defense on July 9 in San Diego, versus El Salvador as the second match of a doubleheader. Curacao and Jamaica will begin play in Group C in the first match of that day.

The two group-stage matches in the CONCACAF Gold Cup scheduled to be played in Houston are just 50 days away.

The doubleheader, which features the national teams of Costa Rica and Canada squaring off at 6:30 p.m. CDT followed by Honduras and French Guiana at 9:00 p.m. CDT, is set for Tuesday, July 11 at BBVA Compass Stadium.

NOTE: Media must apply for credentials for the event by no later than Sunday, June 18. Users who are not currently registered in the CONCACAF Media Center will need to submit their application no later than Sunday, June 18, 2017, to ensure they meet the Gold Cup application deadline. A minimum of ten (10) business days are required for processing a Media Center application. For this reason, media are urged to begin the process as early as possible.

The Houston matches will be the pivotal second game of the group stage for all four teams in Group A. They open group play on July 7 at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, N.J. The second game in group play is vital, as it provides an opportunity for teams to secure their spot in the elimination rounds if they won their first match, or keep their tournament hopes alive if they dropped the opener.

Honduras headlines the group, and may be led by as many as four Houston Dynamo players, including forwards Romell Quioto and Alberth Elis. The duo, each in their first season with the Dynamo, have combined for nine goals and three assists already this year. Longtime Dynamo midfielder and Honduran legend Boniek García along with Dynamo winger José Escalante may also be called in to the team.

Costa Rica has been one of the most consistent sides in recent Gold Cup history, having advanced to at least the quarterfinals in every tournament since 2005. Los Ticos are led by the goalscoring duo of forwards Bryan Ruiz and Joel Campbell, both of whom play for Sporting CP in Portugal. Major League Soccer fans will also recognize midfielders Christian Bolaños and David Guzmán of Vancouver and Portland, respectively.

Canada will feature arguably the brightest young striker in Major League Soccer, Orlando City SC forward Cyle Larin. Larin has terrorized MLS defenses to the tune of 38 goals in the last two-plus seasons. Larin is joined up front by Toronto FC forward Tosaint Ricketts, whose 15 goals for Les Rouges are the fifth-most in Canadian history.

French Guiana will be making its Gold Cup debut after qualifying for the first time. Representing a nation of just over 250,000 people, the team played its way into the Gold Cup through its performance in the 2016-17 Caribbean Cup. Two years ago, the French Guianese missed out on a Gold Cup berth after they fell 4-3 on aggregate to Honduras in a two-game playoff. They will have an opportunity for revenge on July 11 in Houston.

On Friday, May 12 when the Houston Dynamo host Vancouver Whitecaps FC at 8 p.m., a special milestone will take place: BBVA Compass Stadium will celebrate its five-year anniversary. The stadium officially opened its doors on May 12, 2012 for a Dynamo home game against D.C. United.

Over the last five years, BBVA Compass Stadium has played host to more than 225 ticketed events including Houston Dynamo and Houston Dash homes games, Texas Southern University home football games, international soccer and rugby matches and concerts. The stadium has hosted 16 different international soccer clubs, 27 men’s and women’s national soccer teams and 17 men’s and women’s national rugby teams.

“We are all very proud of BBVA Compass Stadium and the impact it has made over the last five years. It has become one of the premier soccer venues in North America and a great home for the Dynamo, Dash and international competition. Veteran venue management executive Juan Rodriguez has been named the new Executive Vice President and General Manager of BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston, stadium officials announced today. He is expected to officially join the stadium operations team in June.

BBVA Compass Stadium is the home of Major League Soccer’s Houston Dynamo and the National Women’s Soccer League’s Houston Dash, and is operated by the Dynamo and Dash organization. Rodriguez spent the previous three years as the Senior Vice President of Arena Operations for the NBA’s Sacramento Kings.

In that role, he oversaw the construction and opening of the Golden One Center, the Kings’ new home arena in Downtown Sacramento hailed as the greenest and most technologically advanced sports venue in the world, and served as General Manager of the arena.

"We are extremely fortunate to be adding Juan to our organization. He is among the top venue managers in the United States,” Houston Dynamo President Chris Canetti said. “We're happy that he's coming home to Houston to help us in our continued growth of BBVA Compass Stadium."

The move brings Rodriguez back to Houston, where he previously spent more than 14 years with Reliant (now NRG) Park in a number of roles. During his tenure at Reliant Park, Rodriguez helped oversee the construction and opening of Reliant Stadium, home of the NFL’s Houston Texans, and major events such as Super Bowl XXXVIII, the 2011 NCAA Final Four, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, and numerous major international soccer matches.

“Houston is home to many wonderful memories for my family and I,” Rodriguez said. “I’m excited to join the Dynamo and Dash and to create incredible stadium experiences, including special events, concerts and more for a vibrant and diverse community.”

Rodriguez brings nearly 25 years of sports and entertainment experience to this role, including experience in the NFL, NBA, NHL, NCAA in addition to a diverse entertainment background. He began his operations career with an Arena Football League team in his hometown before transitioning to venue management at Miami Arena in 1995.

The U.S. Women’s National Team (USWNT) will face Russia in a friendly at 1 p.m. on Sunday, April 9 at BBVA Compass Stadium, U.S. Soccer announced today.

Tickets will go on sale Thursday, Feb. 23 and begin at $25. ESPN will broadcast the match and this will be the fourth USWNT game at BBVA Compass Stadium and seventh in Houston. The USWNT is undefeated in the Bayou City and return to Texas where they claimed the 2016 CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying Championship.

The USWNT features Houston Dash goalkeeper Jane Campbell, midfielder Morgan Brian and forward Kealia Ohai who made her debut with the senior team last October. Additionally, USWNT co-captain Carli Lloyd, who is scheduled to return to the Dash in June, could make her first appearance at BBVA Compass Stadium since the final game of the 2016 NWSL regular season. In preparation for the Big Game, BBVA Compass and CBS Radio Houston are celebrating all those who help Houston shine bright by bringing you the Live Bright Bash, a FREE CONCERT on Saturday, January 21st at BBVA Compass Stadium. This super celebration will feature music artists Jessie’s Girl, The Last Bandoleros, Raelynn, and headliner – Jake Owen!

If you are headed to the home of the Houston Dynamo tonight for the concert, here is what you need to know:

SHOW TIME

The first act will hit the stage at 6:00 p.m. tonight. The concert is scheduled to last until approximately 11:00 p.m.

PARKING

Lots B & C, located at the intersection of Texas Ave. and Bastrop St., will open at 3:00 p.m. and will be cash only. Numerous private parking lots located around BBVA Compass Stadium will also offer cash parking; and street parking, which is metered by the City of Houston, may be available as well. Please pay close attention to all posted signage if you are parking on the street. BBVA Compass Stadium is not responsible for the safety and security of vehicles parked in private lots and/or on the street.

STADIUM GATES

Gates will open at 4:30 p.m., 90 minutes before the scheduled start of the first performance.

The game, which was brought to Houston by Chuly Sports and Alliance Sports Firm, is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. CST kickoff.

Tickets for the match will go on sale Friday, January 6, at 10 a.m. CST, with prices starting at $35. Tickets may be purchased online at BBVACompassStadium.com, by phone at 713-547-3000, or in person at the BBVA Compass Stadium Box Office (open Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.).

Honduras could feature long-time Houston Dynamo star Boniek García along with two new Dynamo signings, forwards Alberth Elis and Romell Quioto. Los Catrachos, who currently sit fourth in CONCACAF 2018 World Cup Qualifying with three points through two games, will also compete in the Copa Centroamericana in January in Panama with spots in the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup at stake.

Led by former Dynamo captain Giles Barnes and Philadelphia Union goalkeeper Andre Blake, the Reggae Boyz will be looking to build towards the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup. Houston (Saturday, October 15, 2016) - Cruz Azul will face Pumas UNAM on Sunday, November 13 at BBVA Compass Stadium in a friendly match between two of Mexico's largest clubs. The match is scheduled to kick off at 4 p.m. CT as part of the Moneygram Socio MX Tour.

Cruz Azul is one of the largest clubs in Mexico, with eight First Division championships and six CONCACAF Champions League titles. Founded in 1927, the Mexico City club is tied for tenth place in the 2016 Apertura season of Liga MX, with 15 points after 12 games. Los Cementeros feature Ecuador national team midfielder Joao Rojas, Paraguayan forward Jorge Benitez, Argentinian midfielder Christian Giménez and Chilean Francisco Silva.

Pumas UNAM is one of the most successful clubs in Mexico, with seven First Division championships and two League SuperCup trophies. Founded in 1954, the club has produced some of the biggest names in Mexican soccer through its academy system. Academy alumni include Hugo Sanchez, Claudio Suarez, Luis Garcia, Jorge Campos and Hector Moreno. The Mexico City club is in fourth place in the 2016 Apertura season of Liga MX, with 20 points after 12 games. Tigres U.A.N.L. To Face Santos Laguna in Houston October 7

Houston (Tuesday, August 23, 2016) – International soccer returns to BBVA Compass Stadium when Liga MX rivals Tigres U.A.N.L. and Santos Laguna face off in a friendly on Friday, October 7. Kickoff is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. CDT.

Liga MX kicked off the 2016 Apertura season in mid-July, with Tigres currently sitting in third place with 12 points after six games. Stars and starters for both teams are expected to be in attendance as they work to stay sharp for the remainder of 2016 Apertura.

Tigres are four-time Liga MX Champions. Under the direction of Ricardo “Tuca” Ferretti they have established themselves as the league’s newest powerhouse, making it to the Final of the most recent Copa Libertadores.

Santos Laguna were champions of the 2015 Clausura season. Former Mexico manager Jose Manuel de la Torre was hired last week as their new Head Coach. De la Torre was the youngest coach in Liga MX history to lead a team to a championship when he did so with Chivas de Guadalajara in 2006, and he led El Tri to the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup championship.

Chivas de Guadalajara Coming to BBVA Compass Stadium Labor Day Weekend

HOUSTON (Friday, July 29, 2016) – Club Deportivo Guadalajara, better known as ‘Chivas’, will play a friendly at BBVA Compass Stadium on Sunday, September 4, the stadium today announced. The Houston Dynamo will be the visiting opponent, with kickoff scheduled for 6:00 p.m.

The match, presented by Chuly Sports(logo attached), will also include a Fan Fest area, located on Rusk Street. The Fan Fest will feature food and games, as well as a concert by Hispanic artists Larry Hernandez, Fuego, 24 Horas, Thomas The Latin Boy and other celebrity guests. Entry into Fan Fest and the concert is included with each ticket purchase.

Chivas are one of the most well-known teams of Liga MX, with 11 league titles under their belt. Their roster includes popular Mexican National Team stars Nestor Calderon and captain Carlos Salcido and rising stars in 22-year-old defender Carlos Salcedo and 20-year-old midfielder Orbelín Pineda.
